After nearly two decades of pioneering advocacy, Elena leaves an unparalleled impact that has empowered and uplifted carers across NSW.
Yesterday, as Elena attended her final Annual General Meeting as CEO of Carers NSW and celebrated the organisation's many achievements over the past 12 months, it is a fitting moment to reflect on her remarkable journey and enduring contributions to Carers NSW.
Following 18 years of extraordinary leadership at the helm of Carers NSW, Elena Katrakis, has announced she will be stepping down as CEO in December 2024.
Leaving behind a remarkable legacy of advocacy, data driven research and policy, innovation, and empowerment for carers she has announced her resignation as she looks forward to starting a new chapter.
“I have been a hands-on CEO, and I have loved it. We have had carers at the centre of all that we do at Carers NSW, and it has been a privilege to engage with and work with so many over the years; trusted experienced voices telling us what is needed and guiding our systematic advocacy, service design and approach to all we do. I thank you for your support and feel confident that I will be leaving Carers NSW in a good place with extended funding agreements and other project funding secured well into the future.

Elena joined Carers NSW as CEO in 2006 and under Elena’s guidance, Carers NSW has grown into a leading force for change in the lives of carers across NSW and Australia more broadly. Her leadership has shaped state and national policy, improved service systems, and helped to provide a voice for the millions of Australians who care for loved ones.
Throughout her tenure, Elena has championed a continued focus on young carers and diverse groups of carers, and an unwavering commitment to enhancing and sharing the evidence base about carers through prioritising research initiatives.
While Elena will be deeply missed, her impact will continue to resonate through the ongoing work of Carers NSW and the countless lives she has touched.
