National Carers Week 2011

National Carers Week 2011 ran from Sunday 16 – Saturday 22 October 2011. The theme for National Carers Week 2011 was Anyone Anytime.

Carers Day Out took place on Tuesday 18 October 2011, many events were held across NSW including a free event for carers in Martin Place, Sydney.


NSW Carers Awards 2011

To launch National Carers Week 2011, a special awards ceremony was held at Parliament House, Sydney to announce the Carer Ambassador Awards and the NSW Carer of the Year. Ceremonies were also held across the state to honour 143 local carer award recipients.

The eight Carer Ambassador Award recipients for 2011 were:

  • Antonia Kapsalis - Caring Partner and NSW Carer of the Year
  • Jann O'Connor - Senior Carer
  • Carmel Flavell - Caring Volunteer/Community Member
  • Helen Baczynskyj - Caring Family or Parent
  • Carreen Dew - Young Carer
  • Susan Murphy - Caring Partner
  • Railcorp - Carer-Friendly Workplace
  • Candles Cancer Support Group - Carer Support Group

The Awards, now in their second year were held in partnership with Carers NSW and the NSW Government.


Don’t Be Careless – Connect with Carers

Throughout May and June 2011, Carers NSW hosted a series of six networking luncheon events across NSW to connect with carers and service providers. Carers NSW held the Don't Be Careless - Connect with Carers events to meet with carers and organisations throughout the region and increase awareness and understanding of carers and the caring role.

At the events, Carers NSW presented key information on its role in policy development and supporting carers, and outlined new programs that are available to carers and service providers. The events also provided networking opportunities for carers, government representatives, and service providers to share their experiences and services with one another. Carers NSW hosted 157 carers, 107 service providers, and 6 government representatives totalling 276 attendees throughout NSW.


Carers NSW 2011 Biennial Conference

The Carers NSW 2011 Biennial Conference Changing Society; Changing Needs - new directions in carer support was held in Sydney on Thursday 17 and Friday 18 March 2011. 

The conference brought together health and community care professionals, service providers, researchers, policy advisors and government representatives to provide an opportunity to explore practice and ideas, research and initiatives in carer support under the following key themes:

  • Health, Wellbeing and Social Care: effective programs and approaches in promoting health and wellbeing amongst carers.
  • Research and Policy to Practice: implications for supporting carers.
  • Partnerships in carer support practice and care management.
  • Technological innovations to support consumers and carers, and improve carer team partnerships.

Our policy team works in a variety of ways to represent carers. We make written submissions and reports, attend meetings and forums, work in partnership with governments and other agencies, provide advice to a range of stakeholders, conduct research to raise the profile of carers within the sector and more broadly.

President's Editorials

The former President of Carers NSW, Laraine Toms, wrote in the Carers NSW newsletter, Carers News, about a range of carer related issues, including diverse themes such as the concept of resilience, the development of carer recognition policy, and many others.
