The NSW Government handed down the 2026-27 NSW Budget.
Ahead of it, Carers NSW called for practical measures that recognise carers, reduce preventable crisis points, and strengthen the systems carers rely on every day.
Here's what the Budget delivered, and where we'll keep pushing for better outcomes for carers.
Measures that could benefit carers
We welcome a number of investments that could impact carers and the people they care for:
- The continuation of the $250 rebate for energy-efficient front-loader washing machines, a measure we called for in our pre-budget submission.
- An additional $71.7 million for IPTAAS, supporting patients who travel long distances for care, and the continuation of the Taxi Transport Subsidy Scheme.
- The continuation of energy rebates for concession card holders, seniors, and people who rely on medical equipment.
- $631.9 million over five years to commence the Thriving Kids program from October 2026, providing early support for children aged 8 and under with developmental delay or autism.
- New funding to strengthen hospital patient flow and discharge, alongside a $35.7m aged care reform package to improve patient flow
- Regional measures including wheelchair-accessible taxis, free parking at rural and regional hospitals, and concessional parking for carers who visit frequently.
- $184.1 million for frontline domestic and family violence services, and continued investment in mental health and disaster recovery.
Where we'll keep advocating
While these are positive steps, the Budget did not include cost-of-living relief targeted specifically to carers, who continue to face significant financial stress.
Recognition measures we have long called for, including a NSW Carer Card, the identification of young carers in schools, and stronger hospital discharge support for patients with a carer were also missed opportunities and these will remain our priorities.
Carers NSW will continue to work with the NSW Government, our stakeholders, and carers to ensure carers are recognised in their own right and supported through the systems they support on a daily basis.
