Carers NSW is proud to announce the launch of the 2024 Click and Connect Young Carers Online Art Exhibition, a vibrant celebration of creativity and resilience. This inspiring exhibition features artwork created by young carers aged 12-18 who participate in the Click and Connect peer support program.
Click and Connect is a weekly online peer support group for young carers, providing a much-needed space for connection, creativity, and building community. The program allows young people who provide unpaid care to loved ones with disabilities, chronic illnesses, mental health conditions, or substance dependencies to share their experiences and support one another.
“Young carers are an integral part of our community, often taking on significant responsibilities while balancing their own education and personal lives,” said Elena Katrakis, CEO of Carers NSW. “The Click and Connect program has created a safe and supportive environment for these young people to connect, share, and express themselves. This art exhibition is a powerful testament to their talent, resilience, and creativity, and we’re thrilled to celebrate their achievements with the broader community.”
The exhibition includes works produced by young carers during the program’s weekly sessions, which have supported over 30 young people since its inception on 7 February 2024. Over the course of 30 sessions, participants have engaged in activities like painting, drawing, and creative storytelling, all while building meaningful connections with their young carer peers.
- There are over 391,300 young carers across the country, with more than 150,000 under the age of 18.
- Young carers often take on roles such as household management, administering medication, and providing emotional support.
- Many young carers begin their caring responsibilities as early as five or six years old, yet they remain largely hidden in the community.
- Young carers are disproportionately represented among culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) and First Nations young communities.
“The Click and Connect program provides a vital outlet for these young carers to take a break from their caring roles, connect with others, and explore their creativity,” added Ms. Katrakis. “This exhibition shines a spotlight on their invaluable contributions and the importance of recognising and supporting young carers across Australia.”
