Carers come from a wide range of different backgrounds and circumstances, including differences in age, gender identity, physical ability, sexual orientation, socio-economic and educational background and language group.

Carers exist in all communities, including Aboriginal communities, those of culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds (CALD), LGBTQI+* communities, and live throughout metropolitan, regional, rural and remote NSW.

Some groups of carers experience additional challenges relating to diversity, such as not being able to find services or peer networks where their needs are met, or experiencing exclusion or discrimination. Diverse groups of carers are also less likely to identify as carers, for these and other reasons, such as cultural norms that perceive caring as a private, familial duty or community responsibility.
