In 2014, Carers NSW was selected as a provider under the Drought Assistance Package to deliver and facilitate events to improve the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities within ten Local Government Areas (LGAs) across NSW.
Events were held from July 2014 to June 2016 in the LGAs of Armidale Dumaresq, Glen Innes, Severn, Guyra, Gwydir, Moree Plains, Narrabri, Tamworth Regional, Tenterfield, Uralla, Walcha and their surrounding villages.
To effectively support quality outcomes for communities across the ten LGAs, Carers NSW partnered with six Drought Assistance providers; The Ascent Group, Anglicare Northern Inland (ANI), Richmond PRA, Challenge, The Schizophrenia Fellowship and Centacare New England North West (NENW).
As part of the Drought Assistance Package, Carers NSW delivered and supported a total of 82 events, which were attended by over 32,000 people. Events varied from rural agricultural shows, workshops, training activities, community gatherings, festivals, men’s health nights and Carpe Diem, a touring production starring Gold Logie-winner John Wood. In addition to John Wood, Carers NSW engaged well-known figures Andrew Ettingshausen – ET, as well as Jac and Shaz from the television program My Kitchen Rules, to act as ambassadors for the Drought Assistance Program.
Carpe Diem
As part of the Drought Assistance Package, Carers NSW was funded to promote a series of events including Carpe Diem, a play about mental health starring Gold Logie-winning actor John Wood. The production toured 27 communities in drought affected NSW and was attended by over 2,050 people. Each performance was followed by a community BBQ and Q&A with John Wood and fellow actor Chris Pidd, also the General Manager of Lifeline in Albury.
The combination of the performance, the Q&A and the community BBQ resulted in an extremely special and unique event and provided an opportunity to meet the actors and catch up with friends. John Wood proved remarkable at putting people at ease and breaking down barriers which resulted in open and honest discussion about mental health, particularly amongst men.
